April Notes

Newmarket Wed 15 April 2015

Fast ground and a following tailwind.

Free Handicap

Faydhaan was disappointing bearing in mind his reputation and market support and is still a work in progress not having come together and still in need of the run. It will be interesting to see the progress he makes but the potential is there. I remember Nayef looking a mess before the Craven despite looking a top prospect at two. He still went on to win Group Ones. Jungle Cat had done well.

Nell Gwyn

Lady Correspondent impressed and is a real athletic sort but failed to fire here. She is much better than this and will improve.

Beautiful Romance has made up into a fine filly and backward here will improve for a step up in trip and some easier ground.

Feilden

Golden Horn was the best horse from the meeting but I did not like how he kept pulling on his bit all the way down to the start. He did however settle well in the race.

Nearly all the Gosden’s were well forward during the week. GH not quite so and should come on more than most from the yard. He is up to Dante standard.

Newmarket 16th April 2015

Fast ground with the wind reversing and blowing into runners

Craven

Moheet and Kool Kompany best with the former having the fitness nod and ground doubts about KK and a 3lb pen.

Newbury Friday 17th April 2015

Fast ground

Dubai Duty Free Conditions

The rag came off Star of Seville at the last moment. A good bodied, good quartered sort who will improve again.

Gibeon 90 and Lord Ben Stack 92 have done well. Ooty Hill ok but may have carried a bit.

Dubai Duty Free 3yo H/C 7F.

Historically a good handicap.

Strong Chemistry, Desert Force and Capel Path best with the former giving 12lb. They pulled clear from the rest. CP looks a plot for HRM.

Handicap marks increased: CP went from 83>89, DF 83>94 and SC 95>104.

Newbury Saturday 18th April 2015

Fast ground again

John Porter

Pethers Moon is a favourite of mine. As I said this time last year, he should be a truly international star but his career has been badly planned and implemented since then. He appears more top draw than ever but could not concede 5lb to Arab Spring who has also done well. Ryan vs Dobbs also a huge factor. Again all these older horses much fitter than the 3yo’s. Don’t Stare has improved a deal.

Fred Darling

Jellicle Ball, Tiggy Wiggy, Jelly Monger and Lyfka all training on. Silver Rainbow very hairy but stays on 82.

Greenham

Ivawood is top class. Estidhkaar has trained on. Code Red and Flaming Spear have done really well. Belardo has not grown at all though his upholstery/chassis ratio remains high.

NB: Both Trial Winners Redstart and Muhaarer were very fit and well and nicely muscled up without being the preferred on the day.

Dubai Duty Free Maiden 3yo 8F Div I.

Intilaaq looked a Group horse beforehand and won well for a 97. Chief Spirit has done well and is lucky to get only an 80.

Sandown Friday 24th April 2015

Ground heavily watered and times bordering on Good to Soft

Esher Cup 8F h/c 3yo Colts

Purple Rock has done well. He did not seem to handle the ground and should remain on 85.

Gordon Richard Stakes

I said a year ago that Western Hymn was a Group One contender. Though he won a Group 2 he did not really achieve what he was capable of. He has been gelded and in good nick won a good renewal.

Postponed has been a favourite with me since first spied before the Strutt and Parker maiden at the Newmarket July meeting and has done well since last term though perhaps only 95% today. He will improve and be better for 12F.

Cannock Chase was not for me last year but he too has done well.

Ayrad has done well but blew hard after the race.

Bet365 Mile All Age Colts

Shifting Power looks Group One and although he has soft ground form has a top of the ground action and should be better with a firmer surface.

Bow Creek has done particularly well but like stable mate Jungle Cat ran below par.

Colts Classic Trial 10F

Commemorative has made up into a big workmanlike type but dull in his coat here.

Cape Clear Island has done well since the Craven.

5F Sprint H/C 3Yo Colts

Waady was a class above these and will step up in company.

Zeb Un Nisa is a stocky good bodied filly who should have a good season.

Nordoff Robbins 3yo Fillies Maiden 10F

La Boheme looks a quality staying filly in the making and could end up in the Park Hill.

B365 10F H/C Colts

I said last year that Cloudscape was a Group horse winning a handicap off 85.

This year Jack Hobbs is a Group One horse running off 85. A beautiful looking sort he was in great nick as per nearly all John Gosden’s in the last 10 days. He floated throughout the race and won in a canter. A wonderful prospect.

There was money for Stravagante but he was never put in the race. He is Listed class.

The rest were well up to par for a contest of this nature. Consequently it is hard to crab the winner.

Spring Paddock Notes

Lingfield 22 March 2014

Stepper Point looked to have done well when I saw him at Newbury last September but he failed to get home over 5f 43Yds. He has maintained that progress and was the pick here. Last year’s winner Ladies are Forever was like a hairy goat this time and will improve for some sun.

American Hope was the choice for the 7f Listed but gave too much start to the fav Ertijaal.

Grandeur did not impress as before.

Newbury 11 April 2014

Kasb was the pick and was fit and well but reported to be a screw – hence the price. Be Bold was second in but carried condition.

Western Hymn confirmed all the promise of his Kempton run and the evidence in the paddock qualified him as having made up into a genuine Group One contender. Though green to post and in the race he still quickened nicely.

Gods Speed 84 Belfilo 78 and Shankly 77 have done well.

Muwaary, Hors de Combat 91 and Torchlighter 85 are progressive.

Newbury Saturday 12 April 2014

Solid contenders for the John Porter. Mutashaded, Quiz Mistress and Cocktail Queen 97 have done well. Nearly Caught was backward.

In then Fred Darling Joyeuse has strengthened and was the pick. The wraps came off J Wonder at the last moment. She has come on since last term and was the pick for her Newbury win in July. Alys Love has come on.

Kingman had all the components when spied first time before his first run and has made up into a tremendous Group One Plus horse. Astaire has carried forward the improvement revealed before the Middle Park. Lat Hawill and Windfast 97 looked good.

Newmarket 16 April 2014

Quite a strong facing wind slowing the times.

Magnus Maximus was the pick for the Tattersalls. Crowdmania and Quickaswecan can be noted when MJ plots them up. Hatha Hoon as well.

Shifting Power is a fine type but was the least fit for the Free Handicap and could be a Jersey contender. Parbold looked good but disappointed.

Overall, not a bad field for the Nell Gwyn. Folk Melody impressed but moved short on the firm ground. She may be dodgy in her off fore. Dorothy B, Lamar (needed it), Majeyda and Sandiva have trained on.

True Story looked in great nick but Obliterator was not 100% and Jamie dropped his hands and Barley Mow did not turn up despite being the part. TS did a good speed figure but may be flattered.

Newmarket 17 April 2014

The wind had reversed and blew behind the runners. Too much water was put on causing the top to be taken off.

The Wood Ditton is only a Maiden so why it gets slagged off always bemuses me. Basem and Famous Kid will improve a deal for the run. Plenty of backward sorts with scope who will progress but I would prefer to form a stronger view when the puppy fat comes off.

I have never been a fan of Johan Strauss. Lyn Valley 93 could be a MJ Epsom or Ascot project. Observational was the pick on looks.

Aljamaaheer has always looked a power block and reverting to sprints was always on the cards. He needs to trap. Es Que Love was in great nick.

Since his very first run I was always a huge fan of Toronado and also noted last April that Olympic Glory and Sky Lantern had made up into genuine Group One 3yo’s. Likewise Toormore has made up into a fine Group One colt and looked tremendous. Be Ready has done well. Postponed is a favourite of mine and has gone the right way but fat on this occasion.

Elkaayed has made up into a bull. Fencing must be a problem to get any condition on. Just The Judge was ok.

Hadaatha was the ‘Sign’ horse for the 7f 3yo Fillies Maiden. Race 7, Race Card No:7 Drawn 7 @ 7/2!! She was also the pick. Solar Sign was second in. Not much else though the rags were on for most of the time.

Cloudscape was a Group horse running off 85. Top Tug 84 and Raven Ridge 85 next preferred, are well in. Volume and Rudi Five One are ok. I did not see Windshear but he was fine on the TV.

Lingfield 18 April 2014

Most of these were in great nick with Easter falling late and having a couple weeks more of Spring to help.

American Hope went off like a bat out of hell this time but it did not help.

I could not believe they went 5/1 Stepper Point over 6f. He ran short. Ballista was as well as he has ever been – for Chester. Valbchek has done well.

Grandeur viewed much better this time. My old mucker Dick Doughtywylie was in fine fettle. Marshgate Lane consistently took the eye.

Ascot 30 April 2014

Escalating and Kibaar were preferred, the latter – a handy medium sized sort, looking in peak condition. Magical Roundabout is not much and I have my doubts about Zebedee as a stallion.

Micks Yer Man continues to progress and could not be any fitter.

Kind Attention has grown a deal into a good sort but carried a lot of condition. Evita Peron was razor fit but folded close home. Solar Magic had come on since HQ but a bit stewy.

Tac De Boistron was the pick but he did not get home in the Cadran and is unlikely to get his ground in the Gold Cup. Cocktail Queen 97 continues to thrive.

Graphic emerged the best before and Baltic Knight was on very good terms.
